ABSTRACT

Compound Qinlan Oral Liquid (,CQOL) is derived from Yinqiao San (), which is composed of Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) and Banlangen (Isatidis Radix). It is a common clinical herbal medicine for clearing heat and detoxification, and has antiviral effects. By reviewing the active ingredients of CQOL and the research progress on its anti-influenza virus and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) efficacy, with view to providing a basis for the clinical use of CQOL in treatment of respiratory diseases caused by SARS-CoV-2.Copyright © 2023 Editorial Office of Chinese Traditional and Herbal Drugs. ABSTRACT

Silymarin, is a phytoactive constituent isolated from the fruits and seeds of Silybum maria-num L Gaetn.), also called milk thistle belonging to the family of Asteracease. The phytoactive has been used to treat several physiological disorders. The objective of this manuscript was to review the therapeutic prospective of silymarin due to its ability to treat several physiological disorders. The da-tabases such as Pubmed, Elsevier, and Google Scholar were reviewed for the investigations or reviews published related to the title. The discussion is focused on the immunomodulatory, chemopreventive, and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of silymarin in various metabolic and dermatological disorders. In addition, the review discusses the different therapeutic potentials of silymarin such as the management of the liver disorder, skin carcinogenesis, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes mellitus, neurodegenera-tive disorders, and several dermatological disorders such as melasma, anti-aging, acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. Silymarin is safe even with a dose higher than the therapeutic dose. Si-lymarin had good potential for the safe and effective treatment of numerous metabolic and dermatological disorders. © 2023 Bentham Science Publishers.

ABSTRACT

Ferula asafoetida is an endemic species in Iran and is rich in oleo-gum resin with high economic value in the world. One important application of F. assafoetida is its traditional use for the management of respiratory ailments. The aim of this review was to collect papers dealing with F. asafoetida oleo-gum resin in respiratory tract's diseases in modern medicine. For preparing the manuscript the scientific databases (Google scholar, PubMed, Springer, Science Direct, Magiran), books, thesis, etc. were searched using the keywords of "Ferula asafoetida", "Ferula scorodesma", "Scorodesma foetida", "Northex asafoetida" plus "respiratory tract", "respiratory disorder" "infection", "cough", "trachea", "traditional medicine" up to Feb 2022 and the collected data were sum-marized, analyzed, and discussed. The results of the investigation confirmed the traditional belief on the efficacy of Ferula asafoetida in the treatment of respiratory viral infection (Coronavirus, influ-enza), cigarette smoking, asthma, cough and cancer, but most studies were limited to in vitro. There was only one registered randomized, blinded, placebo controlled clinical trial for 300 mg F. asafoet-ida aqueous extract capsules (three times a day for 14 days) on 40 patients with COVID-19 without any published results. Although, the studies implied the efficacy of F. asafoetida in the treatment of respiratory treatments, but design large clinical studies for evaluating its efficacy and safety is essential in future investigations.Copyright © 2023 Bentham Science Publishers.

ABSTRACT

Kabasura Kudineer is a polyherbal decoction of the Siddha medical system (an Indian system of medicine), traditionally used to cure fever, colds, coughs, and respiratory ailments. The government of India had recommended Kabasura Kudineer as one of many preventive/treatment measures for COVID-19. Kabasura Kudineer Choornam is an admixed coarse powder of 15 herbs and its decoction is Kabasura Kudineer. The chemical constituents in the 15 herbs used for the preparation of the Choornam are known but the constituents present in the Kabasura Kudineer (decoction) are unidentified. Piperine, vasicine and eugenol are known for their potent activity against respiratory tract infections;hence, they were selected as marker compounds. The present work was planned to simultaneously quantify piperine, vasicine and eugenol in Kabasura Kudineer by the HPTLC method. The optimised mobile phase was toluene: ethyl acetate: methanol: ammonia (5:9:3:0.5, v/v/v/v), and the scanning was carried out at 287 nm. The Rf values of piperine, vasicine and eugenol were found to be 0.70, 0.32 and 0.82, respectively. The linearity range of piperine and vasicine was 500-3000 ng spot-1 and it was 10-60 ng spot-1 for eugenol. The quantities of piperine, vasicine and eugenol in Kabasura Kudineer (100 mL) were 0.03, 0.056 and 0.035 % w/v, respectively. This developed method can be used to simultaneously quantify piperine, vasicine and eugenol in any polyherbal formulation.Copyright © 2023, Informatics Publishing Limited and Society for Biocontrol Advancement. ABSTRACT

Essential oils are potential therapeutics for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), in which some of the volatile compounds of essential oils have been well known for their broad antiviral activities. These therapeutic candidates have been shown to regulate the excessive secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which underlies the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19. We aimed to identify molecular targets of essential oils in disrupting the cell entry and replication of SARS-CoV-2, hence being active as antivirals. Literature searches were performed on PubMed, Scopus, Scillit, and CaPlus/SciFinder (7 December 2022) with a truncated title implying the anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity of essential oil. Data were collected from the eligible studies and described narratively. Quality appraisal was performed on the included studies. A total of eight studies were included in this review;four of which used enzyme inhibition assay, one—pseudo-SARS-CoV-2 culture;two—whole SARS-CoV-2 culture;and one—ACE2-expressing cancer cells. Essential oils may prevent the SARS-CoV-2 infection by targeting its receptors on the cells (ACE2 and TMPRSS2). Menthol, 1,8-cineole, and camphor are among the volatile compounds which serve as potential ACE2 blockers. β-caryophyllene may selectively target the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and inhibit viral entry. Other interactions with SARS-CoV-2 proteases and RdRp are observed based on molecular docking. In conclusion, essential oils could target proteins related to the SARS-CoV-2 entry and replication. Further studies with improved and uniform study designs should be carried out to optimize essential oils as COVID-19 therapies. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The exploration of coffee as an aromatherapy in the health service has not been widely carried out. In many cases, aromatherapy has been shown to reduce stress and fatigue. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to analyzes the effect of coffee aromatherapy on the fatigue and stress levels of female caregivers caring for the elderly at the University of Sumatera Utara Hospital (USU Hospital), in Medan. METHODS: This is a quasi-experiment one group pre-test post-test design. The research involved 16 caregivers were given a treatment of coffee oil by inhalation for 15 min for 3 consecutive days, without coffee oil inhalation and 10% of coffee oil concentration on the 1st day, 20% on the 2nd day, and 30% on the 3rd day. Each sample received a pre-test and post-test in the form of stress and fatigue instruments. The data analysis performed was univariate in order to describe the properties of each variable examined and analyze the mean score. Similarly, bivariate analysis with the analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistical test was used to determine the effect of coffee aromatherapy on reducing the fatigue and stress level. RESULTS: The result showed that most caregivers were elderly children with an average age of 38 years, 81.3% assisted in caring for the elderly, and actively working outside the home. Based on the ANOVA test, the data showed that the administration of coffee aromatherapy for 3 consecutive days has no effect on female caregivers’ fatigue and stress level. However, the mean score showed a decrease in fatigue and stress level before and after coffee oil inhalation in 3 days. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to provide coffee oil aromatherapy intervention with a longer duration to have an effect on reducing caregiver fatigue and stress in the future, so the results are expected to form the basic data for the design of nursing interventions based on complementary therapies in order to reduce the fatigue and stress of caregivers while providing care to the hospitalized elderly.
